New Jersey LCV is the statewide political voice for the environment. We advocate for policies and pass laws to protect clean air, safeguard clean water, and ensure equitable access to preserved open spaces and parks. We amplify the voices of underserved communities who often bear the brunt of environmental harm. We elect environmental champions and hold elected officials accountable, fostering a future where all communities can thrive for generations to come.
The ideal Policy and Organizing Intern is a motivated, energetic person who is passionate about restoring and protecting the environment, is interested in learning about - and ideally has an academic focus on - environmental policy, outreach, the legislative process, and environmental activism. They are looking to meet and work with other environmentally minded people at a leading state-based advocacy organization. This opportunity gives a talented student the rare chance to see behind-the-scenes workings of politics and organizing, insight into the State House legislative process, and what it actually takes to make an impact through policy and advocacy.
This is a part-time paid internship from January – June, 2026.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Deepen knowledge of state-level policy relating to the environment, public health and voting rights by conducting independent background research on legislation and policy topics to organize and prepare the policy team for legislative testimony, coalition meetings and other engagement opportunities.
- Gain knowledge about current political activity by identifying and tracking legislation moving through Trenton, including committee hearings and voting records.
- Utilize and have the opportunity to enhance creative writing skills by developing outreach materials on topics relevant to New Jersey politics, and internal memos for the staff; present when needed.
- Assist in event planning, outreach and coordination, and gaining skills with campaign technology.
- Gain an opportunity to represent New Jersey LCV at partner and coalition meetings, tablings, rallies, and legislative hearings as directed.
- Opportunity to plan and participate in university career fairs representing New Jersey LCV.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and collaboratively.
- Ability to work remotely using your own phone and computer.
- Personable, dependable team player.
- Commitment to environmental conservation.
- Interest in political work preferred.
- Educational or professional background in public policy or environmental policy preferred.
- Fluency in Spanish is a plus but not required.
- The candidate must have reliable transportation.
Compensation: Part-time internships are paid. Compensation is $15 an hour, for 15 hours/week. Letters of recommendation are available upon request.
